Seeing something just once can be far more illustrative than hearing or reading it many times. Thus, we offer demonstrations of our 2D-to-3D conversion products in practice.
- Tutorial on Stereo Conversion Workflow – an overview of the simple stereo conversion workflow.
- Tutorial on Depth Propagation Usage – covers the essentials of using Depth Propagation.
- Tutorial on Depth Propagation with Masks – applicability of Depth Propagation extends beyond creating depth maps for background regions.
- Tutorial on Stereo Generator – getting started with Stereo Generator.
- Tutorial on Stereo Generator – advanced stereo generation.
- Tutorial on Background Reconstruction – getting started with Background Reconstruction Tool.
In cooperation with VFX guru Steve Wright, we created these short, in-depth, workflow-themed tutorials on different conversion topics to illustrate the features and possibilities of our tools and technologies and how they can improve real video sequences. All tutorials use a 2D to 3D Suite implementation for The Foundry NUKE. The version for Adobe After Effects has equivalent capabilities.

2D to 3D Suite Tutorial: Overview of a Simple Stereo Conversion Workflow
In the simplest case, a workflow based on 2D to 3D Suite includes depth key-frame creation, depth propagation from key frames, depth correction, and stereo generation from 2D+Depth. Of course, the conversion workflow for feature films is much more complicated and still requires extensive human interaction and manual work.
2D to 3D Suite Tutorial: Depth Propagation Usage
This tutorial covers the essentials of YUVsoft Depth Propagation (DP): tuning the most important options, selective usage of roto masks and source preparation. As a rule, DP creates depth maps for backgrounds, but it also can propagate detailed depth maps for foreground objects. It is the main automation tool for conversion acceleration in 2D to 3D Suite.
2D to 3D Suite Tutorial: Depth Propagation with Masks
As mentioned in the previous tutorial, YUVsoft Depth Propagation (DP) can create depth maps for foreground regions when a small amount of masking is added. Compared with the traditional approach, DP enables minimal rotoscoping without compromising quality. It saves time, money and human resources, and it makes the conversion workflow faster and simpler.
2D to 3D Suite Tutorial: Getting Started with Stereo Generator
YUVsoft Stereo Generator (SG) is a unique tool for making stereo from 2D+Z while automatically fixing many typical conversion errors without requiring laborious depth-map correction and/or stereo painting. In many cases it also reduces the necessary number and area of clean plates. Using SG is very easy—just set the parallax, set the screen play level and go!
2D to 3D Suite Tutorial: Advanced Stereo Generation
This advanced tutorial on YUVsoft Stereo Generator (SG) covers such complex topics as edge smoothing in stereo and use of clean plates. Edge smoothing is a “last resort” to automatically cope with edge ghosting following application of the depth-map correction options. SG users can employ multilayered clean plates efficiently thanks to alpha-channel processing and automatic occlusion mask generation. For the sake of this tutorial, clean plates and the respective depth maps were automatically generated using YUVsoft Background Reconstruction tool, but third-party tools can also supply the restored background images to SG.
2D to 3D Suite Tutorial: Background Reconstruction Tool
Various methods of background reconstruction are useful in 2D-to-stereo 3D conversion. Large parallax values require high-quality restoration of unknown image regions in occlusion zones. The YUVsoft Background Reconstruction plug-in for Nuke and Adobe After Effects offers the ability to perform quality temporal restoration of backgrounds for moving foreground objects using information from other frames in the sequence. In other words, the tool generates a “real” background as it appears in neighboring frames.
